It was a beautiful day in August when I ventured into the River Spruce Cabins in Estes Park, near the YMCA. The Big Thompson River was roaring and I was never more grateful for the gray skies, bringing rain.
As I squeezed into a tight spot in the office’s parking lot, I exited my vehicle and took a deep breath. I looked at the ponderosa trees, standing still momentarily while the breeze welcomed me to another wonderful Rocky Mountain experience.
The office was tiny, giving only a hint of what was to come. With a collection of 10 cabins that were originally located inside Rocky Mountain National Park, River Spruce Cabins is undeniably a special place.
My headquarters was the tiny Dreamcatcher Cabin, a one-bedroom cozy retreat escape with a knotty pine interior. I unpacked a few things before going outside to sit by the river and take photos.
Before I knew it, it was dusk. I headed inside to turn on the gas stove fireplace and view my photos on the TV. Shortly after dark, I changed into my swimsuit to enjoy the private hot tub outside the front door.
The cabin also has a rock-ringed fire pit in front, but considering the current dry conditions of the state, I opted not to start a fire. Besides, I had a nice gas stove fireplace going inside and a cup of chamomile lavender tea waiting for me.
After my hot tub dip, I sipped my tea and listened to a bit of John Denver and The Eagles, followed by Peter, Paul & Mary, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. It was a perfect evening of relaxation and peaceful beauty.
I slept like a baby that night and woke up to a basket of muffins hanging by the front door in the morning. They were freshly made and delicious! I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect experience.
The cabin was beautiful and though it was during Estes Park’s busiest season, it was surprisingly quiet. I’m always grateful for the silence. I’m more appreciative of the staff at River Spruce Cabins for making my experience memorable.
