In loving memory: Those we lost in 2023

Each year we look back at our loved ones who have walked on. We miss them. We long to see their smile and have another conversation with them. This is a glimpse of the people we have lost who are connected to our community.


Sheri Lynn Voss passed away peacefully in her home in Rollinsville, Colorado, on January 24, 2023.

Sheri was a long-time employee of the Pioneer Inn in Nederland, Colorado.

She is survived by her adoring husband and fishing partner Doug Voss and loving family and friends.


Patrick Kapke had a distinguished career in the U.S. Marine Corps and then a career in civilian law enforcement. Deputy Kapke joined the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 where he served until 2006.

He also worked as an investigator with the Colorado Division of Gaming, and then returned to the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office on a part-time basis in 2016.

Patrick Kapke is survived by his wife Tonia Kapke and their three daughters.

Everyone at the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office feels a heavy loss.


Cadence Tilton passed away on February 8, 2023. She moved to Nederland when she was 13, then attended Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

She was a fun, kind, and quirky free spirit. Cadence cared about people and loved animals.

Cadence is dearly missed by her family and friends.


Linda Wierzbicki Allen moved to Nederland in 1979 with her three daughters. She resided the last 16 years of her life in Black Hawk with her second husband of 34 years, Ross Allen.

Linda had an adventurous spirit whose kindness and generosity touched many lives.


Heather MacAulay Lazrus was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and friend to many.

She was born in Denver and grew up in the Nederland area and in New Zealand. After earning her Ph.D. at the University of Washington Heather joined the Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in 2011 as a project scientist.

Heather was highly valued by her colleagues for being a kind, caring, creative, and inclusive leader.

Her courage, strength, and dignity will always be felt by those who love her and will never forget her.


Antoinette Rose Anderson was born in Los Angeles, California, and passed away in Nederland, Colorado.

All her life she pursued spirituality, dance, and entrepreneurial ventures. She worked in the real estate sector and was a long time practitioner of yoga and dance.

Antoinette was a very active member in the Nederland Lions Club.

She was an amazing wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was the voice of the family in both song and laughter. She spread joy to all she knew and is missed by so many.


Timothy J. Crimmins was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and passed away in Nederland, Colorado.

Timmy, as he was known by his family and friends, was an artist, master mason, and highly skilled in tool restoration. He was also a great storyteller.

His passion for life and his work is greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.

John “Curly” Friery passed away in Central City, Colorado, where he loved spending his retirement years.

He served in the US Air Force for several years as a young man and then worked as a painter when he returned to civilian life in Washington, DC. In the 1980s he moved to Colorado and worked primarily as a property manager.

John loved his pets, dogs and cats, and always had them his entire life.

John is survived by many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mike Hughes was an avid adventurer. He loved exploring the canyons and national parks of the American Southwest. Nothing compared to his passion for the outdoors, except his diligence in being a father to his son Asher and his commitment to supporting his mother.

Mike was an avid explorer of nature and science and strived to learn all he could about the world he lived in. He was also a prolific reader. He embraced the Leave No Trace code and lived his life in accordance with it regardless of his locale.

He is dearly missed and loved by his family and friends.


Marilyn Fagerstrom passed away peacefully in Boulder, Colorado. She spent her 25 year physical education teaching career at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. After retiring she found the beauty of the Colorado mountains and moved to the Bar-K Ranch in Boulder County in 1983.

While living in Boulder County Marilyn discovered that Lefthand Fire and Rescue needed volunteers. She found herself another calling and served 35 years with Lefthand Fire. She did additional training and served as a Public Informational Officer for the inter-agency fire responders across the country, where she reported on many major national wildfires.

Marilyn was also quite the adventurer and world traveler during her life.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.


John Anderson of Nederland, Colorado, passed away on May 4, 2023. He entered the US Army through the ROTC in college. He served until 1989 and retired as a Colonel from his nearly 30 year career in military intelligence.

John and his wife Judy raised two children and they enjoyed road-trips, camping, canoeing, and skiing during their time in the US and abroad.

During his life John had many interests and hobbies. He became a licensed Ham Radio operator in the 1960s. He was a woodworker, photographer, silversmith, and stone cutter. They moved to Nederland, Colorado, from Washington, DC, in 1989. There John took his skiing hobby to a new level through volunteering with the IGNITE Adaptive Sports Program at Eldora Ski Resort.

In retirement he also enjoyed traveling and was an avid astronomer. John even built his own backyard observatory.

John is missed by his children, grandchildren, family members and friends.


Ernestine Burch of Jamestown, Colorado, passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 95.

Ernestine was born in Boulder, Colorado, and graduated from Boulder High School. She and her husband, Frank, raised their four children in the Washington Park neighborhood of Denver, Colorado.

She is survived by her four children, a sister, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.


Cleo Eloise Billingsley passed away on May 30, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona, at the age of 93. She graduated from Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri.

Cleo worked as a medical technologist at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, before marrying her high sweetheart, John Billingsley, in Eldora, Colorado.

Cleo and John raised their children when John finished medical training and served in the Army. They settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for 25 years where Cleo was a member of PEO Chapter AB, the Medical Auxiliary, and was also a competitive golfer.

She enjoyed her retirement years in Sun City West, Arizona, where she had a hole-in-one just shy of her 80th birthday.

Cleo is survived by two of her children, her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and extended family.


David H. Werner passed away on June 23, 2023. He was an excellent cook and master of many trades. He loved nature, animals and the ocean. He had a passion for motorcycles and surfing.

David had many jobs throughout his life. He even built a cabin on Sugarloaf while he lived in Colorado. He liked being outdoors hiking, camping, walking, and just being.

He is missed by his family and friends.


Rev. Mark Lake passed away on June 28, 2023, in Tucumcari, New Mexico. He was born in Carroll, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa and then the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.

His ministry took him and his family to different Presbyterian churches in Iowa, a church in Minnesota, Nederland Community Presbyterian Church in Nederland, Colorado, and finally to an Episcopal church in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Rev. Lake was also an accomplished artist, sculptor and potter. He also loved fishing, canoeing, hiking and riding horses. Rev. Lake and his wife Beverly volunteered for many years at Highlands Camp in Allenspark, Colorado, helping to lead the horse camp trips into the backcountry.

He was a bright light to all who knew him, as beloved family, friend, colleague, or pastor. His passing leaves a great void for those who knew and loved him. 


Max Wheeler, of Bellevue, Washington, passed away on July 8, 2023. He was born in Jackson, Wyoming, and soon moved with his family to Nederland, Colorado.

He was a competitive mountain biker, alpine and cross-country skier (state qualifier ski meister) and member of several high school club teams. He was also a Boy Scout, piano player, alto saxophone player, and participated in many school activities.

Max attended Nederland schools and Northern Arizona University, receiving a B.S. in mechanical engineering. Max leaves his beloved wife Samantha and infant son Cedar.

Throughout his life, he excelled in his pursuits, and most importantly, connected with everyone he met. Whether you met Max once or were a life-long friend, he made a lasting impact and made you feel seen and loved.


Ronald Sterkel passed away peacefully and surrounded by family, on July 28, 2023, in Woodland Park, Colorado.

He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a B.A. in Industrial Design and after college served as a Second Lieutenant in the Army based at the Presidio in San Francisco during the Korean wartime.

In 1963 Ron, his wife Ruth and their children moved to Illinois when Ron accepted a teaching position in the art department at the University of Illinois Champaign. He remained there until he retired in 1990.

Colorado has always been a favorite family vacation destination since the 1950s, especially the town of Nederland, where in 1980 they purchased a log cabin. The cabin became a regular family gathering place.

Ron loved to work with wood and made many intricate wood sculptures, as well as, jewelry, trays and furniture.

Ron is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Ray Shubert was born in Ohio and passed away on August 12, 2023. He attended Boulder High School and received his Mechanic Certification from Boulder Valley VoTech in Boulder, Colorado.

Ray loved cars and motorcycles and was a mechanic from his teenage years until his retirement.

He was a free spirit who enjoyed living all around the western United States but always considered the Boulder, Colorado, area his home base. He lived a simple and uncomplicated life.

He loved to restore old cars and motorcycles and he loved animals. In fact, animals seemed to adopt him.

Ray is survived by his sister, Judy, who will miss her big brother for the rest of her life.


Rosalie Bargmann passed away in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on August 15, 2023. She was a beloved educator and musician, with a passion for philanthropy and the arts.

She earned a degree from North Central College and one from Eastern Michigan University’s College of Business.

In 1997 her and husband, Jerry moved to Nederland, Colorado. They joined the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church where she often played the piano during church service. Additionally, she supported the Peak to Peak Rotary and The Hilltop Guild. Rosalie treasured the friendships she made in the Nederland community even after she moved from the area.

Rosalie is survived by her three children, a grandchild, extended family and friends.


Patricia Everson of Venice, Florida, passed away on August 23, 2023.

Pat’s artistic talent was recognized when she was young and she went to Silvermine School of Art in Connecticut. After college in Pennsylvania and Indiana she attended Elmer Taflinfer Portrait and Figure Study and John Herron Art School.

She has had different work throughout her life from real estate broker to antique shop owner.

While living in Nederland, Colorado, Pat was involved with the DDA.

Pat was an accomplished artist painting a series of portraits of registered historic homes in Venice, Florida. Several of these paintings were featured at the Venice Museum.

Pat was always looking for the next picture to paint. She is missed and loved by many.


Patricia Million passed away in her home in Parker, Colorado, at the age of 63.

Patti was a person who defied simple explanation. Her life included many joyful moments, especially during her years living in the mountains outside Nederland, Colorado, where she hiked for miles, and loved to telemark ski with grace and style.

She was a being of love, light and joy. She is missed by her son, her parents, siblings and all who loved her.


Jane Wodening, beloved author, naturalist and former resident of Nederland and Rollinsville, Colorado, died on November 17, 2023, from natural causes.

She was born in Illinois, but from an early age her heart was in Colorado. Jane always enjoyed the company of animals, particularly dogs, and said she spoke “dog language” sooner than human language. She would later go on to be a writer and publish 14 books.

Jane lived on Lump Gulch for several years. She traveled around the United States. She purchased a piece of land in the 4th of July Canyon near Nederland and built a small cabin. She lived in the cabin at 10,000 feet, year-round, for 10 years without electricity or running water.

Jane is survived by her five children, 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.


Timi Dillon passed away peacefully in her home in Nederland, Colorado.

She lived her life with whimsy, light, and an overall enthusiasm for the world. She was an artist, an actress, and an activist with a heart big enough to love everyone. She embraced travel, culture, music, dancing, animals, and was at home everywhere she landed. The beaches warmed her soul, and the mountains gave her peace.

She will be forever remembered for her adventurous nature, free spirit, creativity, charm, and enduring love for her family and dear friends.

She is survived by her four children, three grandchildren, and four siblings.


Karen Cornell passed away peacefully at her home on December 1, 2023.

After Karen and her husband Roger fell in love with the mountains of Colorado on a summer road trip in their VW bus they decided to move west. They built a home, with their own hands, atop a ridge line overlooking Nederland, Colorado, and the Indian Peaks.

Karen worked as a lab manager at the University of Colorado, and was the Christian Education Elder at the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church for many years.

She loved summertime flower walks on Caribou Mountain, exploring the canyon county of Utah with Roger by her side, sunsets, happy hour with friends on their back deck, and reading and relaxing by the fireside.

Karen is survived by her husband, two daughters, two grandchildren and two siblings.
