This summer there has been a community cereal drive to benefit the Nederland Food Pantry.

Margie Yansura from the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church led the Love Your Neighbor Cereal Drive by organizing it and inspiring others to participate. Donating cereal to food pantries is very helpful because it is expensive and ordinarily is not shared with them by larger food banks or major donors.

The Nederland Community Presbyterian Church has a longstanding relationship with the food pantry. It was started in a closet in the church in 1986. As the food pantry has grown and expanded, the church has never wavered in its support.

For this cereal drive, the three churches in Nederland (St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Calvary Chapel, and Nederland Community Presbyterian) accepted donations to the Nederland Food Pantry instead of a traditional offering during their joint church service on August 4. The amount donated was $378.24.

B&F Mountain Market donated boxes of cereal and also placed a collection bin at the store. The Nederland Community Library and the Nederland Community Center also provided space for collection bins.

In total, 158 boxes of cereal were donated by generous members of the community.

On Sunday, September 1, Nederland Food Pantry Board President Tom Mahowald was met with a domino run of 158 cereal boxes as he was presented with the donated money and cereal.

The generosity of community members and businesses keeps the spirit of loving your neighbor alive and well.
